Do not choose a course simply because its name sounds similar to your traffic charge or because it is shorter, cheaper, online, or more convenient. First determine the exact number of hours and permitted format. If you are given a choice, then choose the option you prefer.

8 Hours, 4 Hours or 12 Hours?

Most course-selection problems become much easier once you identify the number of hours in your instructions and whether you already completed part of the requirement.

8-Hour Driver Improvement

Choose the 8-hour path when you were instructed to complete a Virginia Driver Improvement Clinic or need the Driver Improvement portion of an accepted 8+4 RADEP pathway.

4-Hour Supplemental RADEP

This path is generally for students who already completed an acceptable 8-hour Driver Improvement course and now need the additional reckless-and-aggressive-driving component.

Complete 12-Hour RADEP

What Does Your Paperwork Actually Say?

Course names are sometimes used loosely. The exact wording of your requirement is more important than the search phrase you used to find this page.

“8-Hour Driver Improvement,” “Driver Improvement Clinic,” or “DIP”

These phrases generally point toward an 8-hour Virginia Driver Improvement course rather than the complete 12-hour RADEP program.

“12-Hour RADEP,” “Reckless & Aggressive Driver Education,” or “12-Hour Driving Class”

These phrases generally indicate the complete 12-hour requirement, unless you have already completed an acceptable component.

“4-Hour RADEP,” “RADEP Supplement,” or “Part 2”

These phrases generally point toward the additional four-hour reckless-and-aggressive-driving component after an acceptable 8-hour Driver Improvement completion.

“Driving School,” “Traffic School,” or “Driver Class”

What Does 8 + 4 RADEP Mean?

The traditional RADEP structure can be understood as two components. When the referring authority accepts the components and delivery formats being used, they can form a complete 12-hour pathway.

Important: A Modular 8+4 Path and a Standalone 12-Hour Online Course Are Different Course Structures

Both can represent a 12-hour completion path when accepted, but they are not automatically interchangeable for every student. Follow the instructions that apply to your situation.

Stop and verify your requirement if: your paperwork does not state the number of hours; it only says “driving school”; you are unsure whether online completion is accepted; you already completed part of the requirement but do not know whether that certificate is acceptable; you hold a CDL and have a commercial driver-improvement requirement; or your completion deadline is unclear.

Important Distinctions

RADEP, DMV Safe-Driving Points & CDL Requirements

RADEP Does Not Automatically Mean +5 DMV Points

The standalone 4-hour online RADEP component and standalone 12-hour online RADEP course do not themselves award Virginia DMV +5 safe-driving points.

Safe-driving-point treatment belongs to qualifying Driver Improvement attendance and depends on the reason for attendance and applicable Virginia DMV requirements.

CDL Holders Have Separate Requirements

If you hold a commercial driver's license and are required to complete a commercial driver improvement clinic, a regular online Driver Improvement Clinic does not satisfy that commercial-driver requirement.

I was told to take a 12-hour driving class. Is that RADEP?

A 12-hour driving-class requirement may refer to the Reckless and Aggressive Driver Education Program, but do not rely only on informal wording. Confirm the exact program and permitted format from the instructions issued to you.

What is the difference between 8-hour Driver Improvement and 12-hour RADEP?

The standard Virginia Driver Improvement Clinic is an 8-hour program. The traditional complete RADEP structure combines that 8-hour component with an additional 4-hour reckless-and-aggressive driver education component.

I already completed an 8-hour Driver Improvement course. What do I need now?

If your previous 8-hour completion is accepted toward your current requirement, you may only need the additional 4-hour RADEP component. Confirm acceptance of the previous certificate and the delivery format you plan to use.

Can I complete 8 hours online and 4 hours in a classroom?

That mixed pathway may be available when the authority responsible for your requirement accepts both components and the formats used. The reverse combination—8-hour classroom plus 4-hour online—may also be possible when accepted.

Is the standalone 12-hour online RADEP course the same thing as taking 8 hours online plus 4 hours online?

They are different course structures. One is a complete standalone 12-hour online program; the other is a modular 8+4 pathway using two components. Verify which structure is acceptable for your requirement.

Should I just take the 12-hour course if I am unsure?

No. More hours do not automatically mean that you selected the correct requirement. Determine what you were instructed to complete before registering.

Completed Part Already? If you have already completed an 8-hour or 4-hour component, confirm whether that completion will be accepted.

What Is Your Deadline? Make sure the course and schedule allow enough time to finish your requirement and provide proof of completion.

RADEP and Virginia DMV safe-driving points are separate issues.

Do not choose a RADEP course simply because you expect it to award DMV safe-driving points. The standalone 4-hour online RADEP course and standalone 12-hour online RADEP course do not themselves award Virginia DMV +5 safe-driving points. Driver Improvement point treatment depends on the reason for attendance and applicable DMV requirements.

Is an 8-hour Virginia Driver Improvement course the same as RADEP?

I already completed an 8-hour Driver Improvement course. What should I do?

Can I take 8 hours in a classroom and the 4-hour RADEP course online?
