Virginia RADEP Basics
What does RADEP mean in Virginia?
RADEP stands for Reckless and Aggressive Driver Education Program. It is driver education focused on reckless and aggressive driving, risk, attitudes, emotions, judgment and safer decision-making.
The complete 12-hour structure commonly used for Virginia RADEP combines an 8-hour Driver Improvement component with an additional 4-hour Reckless and Aggressive Driver Education component.
Is RADEP the same as a regular Virginia Driver Improvement Course?
No. A standard Virginia Driver Improvement Clinic is an 8-hour program. The complete RADEP structure adds an additional four-hour reckless/aggressive driver education component.
Someone who only needs Driver Improvement should not assume that the complete 12-hour RADEP program is required.
Does every reckless-driving case require RADEP?
No. Do not determine your course solely from the name of the traffic charge.
The course appropriate to an individual case depends on the actual instructions from the court, attorney or other referring authority.
Why might someone be told to complete RADEP instead of ordinary Driver Improvement?
RADEP includes education specifically directed toward reckless, aggressive and high-risk driving behavior in addition to general driver-safety education.
The referring authority decides whether that additional education is appropriate in a particular case.
Is RADEP legal advice or a legal-defense program?
No. RADEP is driver education. A course provider does not decide whether a charge will be reduced, dismissed or otherwise resolved.
Questions about legal strategy or how course completion could affect a pending case should be discussed with your attorney.

What is the difference between the 4-hour and 12-hour RADEP courses?
The 4-hour RADEP course is supplemental. It is intended for a student who already has an acceptable 8-hour Driver Improvement completion and needs the additional reckless/aggressive driving component.
The 12-hour RADEP course is the complete program for a student who needs the entire requirement.
If I already completed an 8-hour Driver Improvement Course, do I still need all 12 hours?
Possibly not.
If your court, attorney or referring authority accepts the previous 8-hour certificate as the Driver Improvement portion of your requirement, you may only need the additional 4-hour RADEP component.
Confirm acceptance of the previous certificate before purchasing only the four-hour course.
Can I use an 8-hour Driver Improvement certificate from another Virginia school?
Driver Training Solutions can work with qualifying Virginia 8-hour Driver Improvement completions from other schools for the supplemental pathway.
The important issue is whether the court, attorney or other referring authority accepts that prior certificate as part of your specific RADEP requirement.
What if I completed the 4-hour component first?
If your requirement is for a total 12-hour RADEP pathway and an acceptable four-hour component is already complete, ask the referring authority whether you only need to complete the remaining 8-hour Driver Improvement component.
Do not assume two separately completed certificates will be accepted together without confirmation.
What should I do if my paperwork only says “driving school” or “driver improvement”?
Do not guess.
Ask the court, attorney or referring authority to clarify:
- How many hours are required?
- Is RADEP specifically required?
- Is an 8-hour Driver Improvement Clinic sufficient?
- Is online completion permitted?
- Can a previous certificate be used?
Is taking a longer course automatically better?
No. The objective is to complete the course that matches the requirement you were actually given.
Completing more hours does not guarantee any particular legal outcome.
What should I compare besides the number of hours and price?
First make sure the course matches the hours and delivery format required for your situation. Then look beyond duration and price. Consider what is actually taught, the instructional methodology, the recognized organizations behind the education, and the experience of the provider.

Course Format
Online vs. Classroom RADEP Questions
Online availability does not mean every court or referring authority must accept an online course. When the requirement is court-related, verify the permitted format before paying.
Can Virginia RADEP be completed online?
Online RADEP options are available. Whether online completion will satisfy your particular requirement depends on the court, attorney or other referring authority responsible for that requirement.
Does every Virginia court accept online RADEP?
No course provider should assume that every court accepts every online RADEP course in every case.
Confirm acceptance before registration, especially when your paperwork specifies classroom or in-person attendance.
Can a Virginia Driver Improvement Course be completed online?
Yes. Virginia DMV permits Driver Improvement through licensed online providers. DMV states that the online course contains at least eight hours of instruction and the final exam is completed online through the same provider.
If a court required Driver Improvement, confirm that the court accepts a computer-based course.
What if my paperwork requires classroom instruction?
Follow that instruction and choose the corresponding classroom course rather than substituting an online course.

Can I mix online and classroom components in an 8+4 RADEP pathway?
It may be possible when the authority responsible for your requirement accepts both components and their formats.
For example, a student may have an acceptable 8-hour classroom certificate and then complete an accepted 4-hour online supplemental course. The reverse combination may also be possible.
Confirm the exact combination before registering.
Can I complete an online course around my work schedule?
The online courses are designed for flexible access so students can make progress without attending a single scheduled classroom session.
Allow enough time to complete all course requirements and obtain your certificate before any deadline.

RADEP and Your Virginia Court Case
Who decides which RADEP course I must take?
The requirement comes from the authority responsible for your situation—such as a court, attorney, probation officer or other referring authority.

Can Driver Training Solutions tell me what the judge meant?
We can explain the differences between 4-hour RADEP, 8-hour Driver Improvement and complete 12-hour RADEP.
If the court order itself is unclear, contact the court or your attorney for clarification about the exact requirement.
Can I take RADEP before my court date if my attorney recommends it?
Some students complete driver education before court after discussing the matter with their attorney.
Whether doing so is appropriate in your case is a legal-strategy question for your attorney. Completing RADEP does not guarantee dismissal, reduction or any other particular outcome.
Will completing RADEP guarantee that my reckless-driving charge is reduced or dismissed?
No. Completing a driver-education course does not guarantee a particular court disposition.

Is RADEP only for people already ordered to take it by a judge?
Court referrals are a common reason for completing RADEP, but an attorney may also recommend driver education before a court date or as part of case preparation.

Should I wait until the day before my court deadline to finish RADEP?
No. Leave enough time to complete the course, receive your certificate, review it for accuracy and submit it according to your instructions.
Waiting until the last minute creates problems if you selected the wrong course, misunderstood a requirement or need corrected documentation.
Virginia DMV Points
RADEP, Driver Improvement and +5 Safe-Driving Points
Safe-driving-point eligibility is tied to a qualifying Virginia Driver Improvement Clinic and the official reason for attendance. Do not assume every RADEP product awards DMV points.
Voluntary Driver Improvement
Virginia DMV states that eligible drivers may earn five safe-driving points by completing a Driver Improvement Clinic, subject to its current rules.
Court-Required Driver Improvement
When a court requires Driver Improvement, the court determines whether safe-driving points are to be awarded. Appropriate court documentation must be provided to the clinic.
4-Hour / 12-Hour RADEP
Do not purchase the standalone 4-hour Supplemental RADEP or complete 12-hour online RADEP product expecting those products by themselves to create +5 DMV safe-driving-point credit.
Does the 4-hour Supplemental RADEP course award +5 DMV points?
No. The four-hour course is supplemental reckless and aggressive driver education. It is not by itself an 8-hour Virginia Driver Improvement Clinic for safe-driving-point purposes.
Does the complete 12-hour online RADEP course award +5 DMV points?
The Driver Training Solutions complete 12-hour online RADEP product is not sold as a +5 safe-driving-point course.
If DMV points are your objective, identify whether you need a qualifying 8-hour Virginia Driver Improvement Clinic and select the correct attendance reason.
How often can I earn five points through Driver Improvement?
Virginia DMV's current point rules permit eligible clinic-earned safe-driving points subject to its applicable timing and eligibility requirements, including the 24-month rule.
A Virginia driver's safe-driving-point balance cannot exceed +5.
Do drivers under 18 receive safe-driving points when DMV or a court requires the clinic?
Virginia DMV states that drivers under age 18 do not receive safe-driving points when the clinic was required by DMV or a court. Voluntary attendance is treated differently.

RADEP Certificates and Course Completion
What happens after I complete an online RADEP course?
After successful completion of the required course material, your completion documentation is processed according to the course.
Driver Training Solutions online RADEP certificates are sent by email. Review the certificate for accuracy when you receive it.
Does Driver Training Solutions automatically file my RADEP certificate with the court?
Do not assume that the certificate has automatically satisfied your filing obligation.
Follow the instructions from your court, attorney, probation officer or referring authority regarding where and how the certificate must be submitted.
What information should I check on my certificate?
Review your name and other identifying information for accuracy before submitting the certificate.
Use accurate registration information when creating your course account to reduce the chance of delays or corrections.
What if I have a deadline?
Complete the course early enough to allow time for certificate processing, review and submission.
The student remains responsible for complying with the deadline provided by the court or other referring authority.
Are online-course purchases refundable?
Driver Training Solutions online-course orders are non-refundable. Confirm the correct course and accepted format before paying.

Does a Regular Online Driver Improvement Course Satisfy a CDL-Specific Requirement?
No. Virginia DMV specifically states that an ordinary online Driver Improvement Clinic does not satisfy a Commercial Driver Improvement Clinic requirement.
If you hold a CDL or the relevant offense involved operating a commercial motor vehicle, verify the correct clinic before registering.
Virginia DMV Commercial Clinic InformationIs Virginia ISAP the Same as RADEP?
No. Virginia's Intelligent Speed Assistance Program (ISAP) is a separate program administered through VASAP involving approved Intelligent Speed Assistance technology and restricted-driving requirements.
A driver may encounter ISAP, Driver Improvement or RADEP as separate requirements. One should not automatically be treated as a substitute for another.
