Understanding the Virginia RADEP Program

What does RADEP mean in Virginia?

RADEP stands for the Reckless and Aggressive Driver Education Program. The complete Virginia RADEP program is a 12-hour driver education program that addresses general driver improvement as well as the attitudes, decisions, emotions, and behaviors associated with reckless and aggressive driving. The complete program generally consists of an 8-hour Driver Improvement component followed by an additional 4-hour Reckless and Aggressive Driver Education component.

Is RADEP the same thing as an ordinary Virginia Driver Improvement Course?

No. A standard Virginia Driver Improvement Course is generally an 8-hour program. The complete RADEP program includes the 8-hour Driver Improvement component plus an additional 4-hour component devoted specifically to reckless and aggressive driving.

A person who needs only an 8-hour Driver Improvement Course should not assume that a 12-hour RADEP course is required. Likewise, someone instructed to complete the full 12-hour RADEP program should not assume that an 8-hour Driver Improvement Course by itself satisfies the requirement.

Why would a Virginia court require a 12-hour RADEP course instead of an 8-hour class?

RADEP may be used in cases involving more serious driving behavior, including reckless or aggressive driving and other significant traffic-related situations. The specific course a person must complete depends on the instructions issued in that individual case. A student should rely on the court order, attorney, or referring authority rather than choosing a course based only on the traffic charge.

Does everyone charged with reckless driving in Virginia have to take RADEP?

No. A reckless driving charge does not automatically mean that every driver must complete the same course.

Choosing Between the 8-Hour, 12-Hour and 4-Hour Courses

How do I know whether I need an 8-hour Driver Improvement Course or the complete 12-hour RADEP program?

• Start with the exact instructions you received. If you were specifically instructed to complete an 8-hour Virginia Driver Improvement Course, you may not need the additional RADEP component.
• If your instructions say 12-hour RADEP, Reckless and Aggressive Driver Education Program, or another clear 12-hour requirement, you will generally need the complete program. When the wording is unclear, contact the court or your attorney before registering.

Why is there a separate 4-hour Supplemental RADEP Course?

• The 4-hour Supplemental RADEP Course is intended for qualifying students who have already completed an acceptable 8-hour Driver Improvement Course but later need the additional reckless and aggressive driving component.
• Instead of automatically repeating another eight hours of Driver Improvement instruction, an eligible student may be able to complete only the additional 4-hour RADEP component.
• Whether a previous 8-hour certificate will be accepted should be confirmed with the court, attorney, or referring authority.

I completed an 8-hour Driver Improvement Course with a different school. Do I have to take another 8-hour course with Driver Training Solutions?

• Not necessarily.
• Driver Training Solutions LLC accepts qualifying 8-Hour Virginia Driver Improvement Clinic certificates from other schools for students registering for our 4-hour Supplemental RADEP Course.
• However, the important issue is whether your court or referring authority will accept your previous 8-hour completion toward your particular RADEP requirement.
• Confirm acceptance before registering for only the remaining four hours.

Can I take only the 4-hour RADEP course if I have never completed an 8-hour Driver Improvement Course?

• The 4-hour course by itself is not the complete 12-hour RADEP program.
• If you have been instructed to complete full RADEP and have not already completed an acceptable 8-hour Driver Improvement Course, you may need the complete 12-hour program.

Can a Virginia RADEP course be completed online?

Does completing the 4-hour Supplemental RADEP Course give me +5 Virginia DMV safe-driving points?

• No. The standalone 4-hour Supplemental RADEP Course does not award +5 Virginia DMV safe-driving points.
• The four-hour course is supplemental reckless and aggressive driving education and should not be taken solely to obtain DMV safe-driving points.

Does completing a 12-hour RADEP course automatically give me +5 DMV points?
