Court Required

DMV Required

How Virginia DMV Points Work With Driver Improvement
Point treatment depends on why you are attending, not simply on completing an eight-hour course.
Voluntary Attendance
Virginia DMV states that voluntary Driver Improvement attendance receives safe-driving points. A driver may receive five points from successful clinic completion once every 24 months, subject to current DMV rules and the maximum +5 balance.
Court-Required Attendance
When a court requires attendance, the court determines whether safe-driving points will be awarded. Documentation authorizing those points must be presented to the clinic.
Other Attendance Reasons
DMV-required drivers age 18 and older receive safe-driving points under DMV's current attendance-reason rules; DMV-required drivers under age 18 do not. Attendance for an insurance discount does not award safe-driving points.
CDL / Commercial Driver Notice
This regular 8-Hour Virginia Driver Improvement classroom course does not replace a Commercial Driver Improvement Clinic when DMV or a court specifically requires the commercial-driver program.
If you hold a CDL or committed the relevant offense while operating a commercial motor vehicle, verify whether the commercial clinic requirement applies before registering.
